True Blood takes place in the small town of Bon Temps, Louisiana, in the not too distant future, where vampires and humans co-exist. Thanks to the development of TruBlood, a synthetic liquid created by the Japanese that slakes the vampires’ thirst, mortals are off the menu however the vamps are finding it increasingly difficult to integrate, or mainstream, into society. Mass media has made it impossible for the blood-suckers to live down their seedy behaviour but there are some Vampires who live up to their bad reps.
A local waitress with telepathic abilities and a knack for solving mysteries, Sookie Stackhouse finds herself drawn to a soft-spoken vampire who’s new in town, Bill Compton. A romance shortly ensues between the telepath and Vampire, but Sookie’s close family and friends question her motives. Meanwhile an anti-vamp serial killer is on the loose murdering women who are sleeping with the enemy, or “fang banging”. While each Bon Temps local experiences their own troublesome spells since the arrival of their first Vampire, the hunt is on for both the living and the dead…
As the whirlwind of killings and illegal blood-sucking finally blows over, Bon Temps welcomes a new addition to town, a wealthy and mystifying woman, Maryann, who knows how to throw a great party. An Anti-Vampire purity group is signing up new recruits, including Sookie’s brother Jason, and Sam Merlotte, owner of the local watering-hole discovers he’s not the only shape shifter in Bon Temps.
A slave to the Merlotte’s kitchen and now to Eric Northman (Louisiana’s head Vampire), Lafayette knows not to mess with the undead anymore, whilst Tara, Sookie’s vulnerable best friend is taken in by Maryann, seeing as her alcoholic Mother hardly recognizes Tara. Loved up Bill and Sookie are roped into solving another mystery together, the disappearance of a 2000 year old Vampire and respected Sheriff of Area 9, in the midst of mentoring Bill’s freshly turned, teenage protégé, Jessica. What will become of Bon Temps and its residents in these weird and wonderful times?
