Grey’s Anatomy | Season One | Episode Nine

Episode 9: “Who’s Zoomin’ Who?”

Seattle Grace Hospital is overrun with secrets, sex and syphilis. Cristina Yang puts it perfectly, “The only thing that spreads faster than disease is gossip.” Everyone has a secret. There are secret phone calls, secret lovers, secret surgeries and the biggest secret of all—a secret spouse.

George asks Alex to take a look at this strange rash he has. It’s syphilis. Yes, syphilis. Of all people, we did not expect George. Alex maybe, but definitely not George. The only person George has been with is Olivia, the nurse he’s been dating. Cristina dubs him Syph Boy and the name catches on FAST.

Chief Webber has a brush with a surgeon’s greatest fears—losing his eyesight. He swears McDreamy to secrecy about removing his eye tumor. He’s afraid of the vultures ready to swoop in and take his position. They won’t know if his eyesight will recover ‘til he wakes up.

George isn’t the only one with syph. There’s a major outbreak at Seattle Grace Hospital which means they are all sleeping together. The staff giggles through a safe sex class just like in high school. And they all have to get tested. C’mon it’s funny—that is if you don’t…

Episode 8: “Save Me”

Grey's Anatomy - Grey's Anatomy, Season 1

Meredith Grey isn’t putting out until McDreamy tells her all about his mysterious past. She wants to believe this relationship is real. Cristina doesn’t want to believe her patient when he warns her that she can’t run away from her pregnancy. She isn’t sure if he’s psychic or psycho. This guy has everyone at Seattle Grace questioning their beliefs.

Meredith’s fight with McDreamy gets in the way of treating a paralyzed rock climber. Maybe it’s a little premature for Meredith to play the suspicious girlfriend, but maybe there’s good reason.

Cristina sees a counselor about ending her pregnancy but when the counselor suggests other options Cristina interrupts, “You know the talking part, I’m not interested.”

Alex and Burke work on the case of a teenage girl who needs a new heart valve. Standard procedure is to install a porcine valve. Alex jokes, “Porcine as in pig, the new white meat.” Ok, some of laughed, but just a little. The girl adamantly refuses because it goes against her religious beliefs. She challenges Alex and Burke, “You’re hot shot doctors. Find another way.” Alex surprisingly bonds with this feisty girl.

Grey's Anatomy - Grey's Anatomy, Season 1

George and Izzie catch McDreamy sneaking out of their house. George catches a doctor with Bourbon breath. And Cristina catches the flu, she hopes it’s just the flu.

Izzie is beyond pissed that Meredith is sleeping with their boss. No wonder she’s been getting all the good surgeries. Izzie is over Mer getting special treatment and she’s really going to let her have it. George makes excuses for Meredith. Clearly, he’s still crushing hard on her.

There’s a flu going around Seattle Grace Hospital and Cristina thinks she got it. She’s sick to her stomach and can barely stand but she’s not going home. She blames Burke but he’s not sick. You’re thinking what we’re thinking, right?

Meredith and McDreamy have to figure out what to do about Bailey. What if she exposes their secret? Other than Bailey and Cristina, no one else knows about Meredith and McDreamy, particularly George who’s crush on Mer still rages on. Izzie is on to George’s crush and she pressures him to ask her out but he denies everything. He’s a bit of a nervous Nellie.

Episode 5: “Shake Your Groove Thing”

Grey's Anatomy - Grey's Anatomy, Season 1

Between her rounds at Seattle Grace, her mother’s Alzheimer’s and her non-relationship with McDreamy, Meredith Grey hardly has time to sleep. Adulthood? Responsibilities? Totally over-rated. What really sucks is when you screw up on the job. And this time she really does. Bad. Her fate as a doctor is in jeopardy.

Meredith nods off during surgery and accidentally punctures a heart. Well, she’s not exactly sure. There’s a hole in her glove and the heart skipped a beat. Maybe it’s nothing. Should she say something? George tries to convince her that everything is fine. The heart is beating. Everything will be fine, right?

Grey's Anatomy - Grey's Anatomy, Season 1

Intimacy baffles Meredith Grey. She is trying to figure out the rules. How do you know when you’ve crossed the line? All she knows so far are that they come attached to the three R’s: Relatives, Romance and Roommates.

Cristina Yang is determined to perform a surgery today and sneaks into SGH at 4:00 AM (yes, 4:00 AM) to call dibs on the perfect candidate—a pancreatic cancer patient who needs the rare “Whipple” surgery. The patient was a former scrub nurse at Seattle Grace and knows exactly the game Cristina is playing. Nurse Fallon puts Cristina in her place saying, “I’ll call you Cristina. You call me Nurse Fallon.” Yes, Ma’am! This is going to be fun—for us, not for Cristina.

Episode 3:
“Winning a Battle, Losing the War”

Grey's Anatomy - Grey's Anatomy, Season 1

Meredith Grey has discovered that the rules of residency are the same as the rules of life. Everything is a competition. Maybe she shouldn’t have let Izzie and George move in. Maybe McDreamy only wants her because it’s against the rules.

Chaos has arrived at Seattle Grace. It is the annual Dead Baby Bike Race (What a creepy name!). Injured cyclists and innocent bystanders fill the surgical schedule and interns call dibs. Meredith just can’t get away from competition.

Meredith and Alex fight over Viper, a bike messenger with spokes sticking out of his stomach. Meredith wins! (Yay, cuz Viper’s got a British accent which of course makes him cuter.) But then Alex takes over and pulls out the spokes. Totally by surprise, Viper kisses her—in front of McDreamy! She couldn’t have planned it better.

Episode 2: “The First Cut is the Deepest”

Grey's Anatomy - Grey's Anatomy, Season 1

When Meredith Grey posts a Roommates Wanted ad, George O’Malley and Izzie Stevens beg her to move in but Meredith believes there should be a definite line between work and personal relationships. Aren’t lines meant to be crossed?

As soon as Meredith is alone in the elevator with Derek, she blurts out, “I’m not going out with you. I’m drawing a line.” Derek asks, “Is this an imaginary line?” (He’s such a flirt!) She throws him against the wall and they have a hot and heavy make-out session.

A rape victim is rushed into the O.R. and you won’t believe what they pull out of the victim’s mouth. A penis! Now Meredith has to carry it around in a cooler until the police arrive. Ew, can you imagine?

Episode 1: “A Hard Day’s Night”

Grey's Anatomy - Grey's Anatomy, Season 1

Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) jolts awake and stumbles over the naked guy next to her. Derek (Patrick Dempsey) attempts to reintroduce himself but Meredith has a big day ahead and she doesn’t have time for awkward chit chat. One night stands are supposed to sneak out in the morning never to be seen again, even if they’re hot and charming. Did we mention Derek was BOTH? Today is her first day as a surgical intern at Seattle Grace Hospital. She doesn’t need any complications.

Later that morn, Meredith meets fellow interns Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh), Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl), and George O’Malley (T.R. Knight) who are all assigned to surgical resident Dr. Miranda Bailey a.k.a. “The Nazi.” She is tough—as in one glare will make you cry tough—but you know you’ll love her. Bailey’s make-your-knees-knock speech has Meredith worried she’ll never live up to her mother’s legendary reputation. She pioneered laparoscopic surgery after all.
